To call what I
write poems would be presumptuous. Even verse is too grand
a name for my efforts. So, I call them pomes. The word has
just the right ring, I think, to convey my hill-billy
approach to rhyme and meter. Don't get me wrong, though;
I'm full of awe for those who can write real poetry. I'm
sure Keats and Shelley and Browning were all nice
fellows--it's just that I can't make heads or tails of half
of what they wrote. To me, Ogden Nash is about as near
perfection as anybody has come in the poetary (I made that
up) arts.
